I can't stand William Donohue but I don't think his letter's main focus is "whining about Catholic-bashing." His main point seems to be "it becomes the business of the public when the venue is supported largely by federal funds."
Your point - "Through their protests, they give invaluable free publicity to what they protest" - nails it.
